Ngatemba Sherpa
Chef and sherpa (Nepal)
Cooking at altitudes of over 4,000 metres with few tools is the daily round of this Nepalese chef and sherpa.
Nathi, as he is known at the base camps, is from Solo Kombu but has now settled in Kathmandu, because he works as sherpa and chef with climbing expeditions scaling the summits of the Himalaya mountains.
He rules the roost at the base camp, providing food and nourishment for climbers. He builds two large stone counters under a tent, and also a fridge with a drum full of spadefuls of snow. Using this and some basic pots and pans, Nathi works hard to produce tasty balanced food, despite the difficulties involved in obtaining produce at these altitudes. He has cooked for people of all nationalities, and tries to adapt to them as much as possible.
He has worked as chef and sherpa since 1995, and when not in the mountains he regains his strength with his wife and two daughters at his little house in the Kapan district (Kathmandu) before the next expedition.
